NASCAR to start testing moratorium on Jan. 1

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - NASCAR will put a moratorium on testing effective Jan. 1.

After the first of the year, competitors will not be allowed to test at NASCAR-sanctioned tracks. That includes Nationwide and Camping World (currently Craftsman Truck) Series tracks.

Teams were made aware of NASCAR's decision at a 7:30 a.m. meeting at Homestead-Miami Speedway Friday morning.

"Hopefully, it's a temporary situation," NASCAR President Mike Helton told media Friday afternoon.

The decision comes on the heels of NASCAR Chairman Brian France's statement Tuesday that he didn't want to "waste" time looking for a solution.

"We're going to need to react to that quickly because the budgets are being set for each team," France said. "So we'll not waste any time on that. We'll do that pretty quickly. It will be comprehensive if we go as aggressive as some have suggested, including ourselves.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) - NASCAR chairman Brian France has ordered a companywide hiring freeze and suspended executive bonuses as the sanctioning body adjusts to the economic crisis.

Although many teams went through offseason layoffs — it's estimated at least 600 people from various organizations have lost their jobs since November's season-ending race — NASCAR itself has been immune to staff reductions so far.
But France said Thursday that open positions will not immediately be filled as NASCAR tightens its belt the same way most of corporate America has done since the economy began to falter last fall.

Any NBA player feels the effect of playing on consecutive nights but none of the others are carrying 325 pounds and 17 seasons up and down the court when they do it. That is why the Suns are considering holding out O'Neal tonight. They play again Wednesday at Minnesota, where Al Jefferson and his season average of 30.5 points and 15.3 rebounds last season against the Suns caused a 2-2 split with a 22-60 team.

"I listen to orders," said O'Neal, showing he truly is a military kid. "I don't put in requests."

LOUISVILLE (AP) — A pre-dawn blaze raced through a barn at a former race track in western Kentucky on Thursday, killing 27 horses and wiping out the dreams of at least one owner.
It was the second deadly fire in less than a year at Riverside Downs outside Henderson, Ky., near the Indiana border. Investigators did not know the cause.

Among the horses killed were Kept Lady, a winner at Churchill Downs on Sunday, and another 3-year-old filly owned by Kenny Miller of Evansville, Ind. He had celebrated his 33rd birthday along with the win.

"This business comes with a lot of highs and it comes with a lot of lows. And the low that you don't want is what happened today," he said. "You can survive losing races; you can go all year without winning races. But when you lose everything, it's a low that you don't want to go to."

Jets' Pace questionable, but expects to play

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — New York Jets linebacker Calvin Pace was listed as questionable Friday with a jammed toe, but expects to play in the team's game at Oakland.

"I don't even want to call it an injury," Pace said. "It's a boo-boo."

Pace, third on the team with 25 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks, jammed the big toe on one of his feet when he landed awkwardly in practice Thursday. He wouldn't reveal which toe was injured, saying, "I can't let that out. Got to keep them guessing."

Pace said it was still a bit stiff Friday, but wasn't concerned.

"It's just one of those things where I kind of stayed off it a little bit today and gave it a little rest," he said. "I'll be fine."

Pace showed no visible signs of the injury, walking without a limp on the field and in the locker room, and said it didn't bother him much during practice. He said the toe wasn't swollen and X-rays weren't needed.

Cardinals strong safety Adrian Wilson was fined $25,000 for his hit on Bills quarterback Trent Edwards last Sunday and warned that future infractions will lead to stiffer penalties.

In a letter sent to Wilson, league officials noted that he was fined twice in 2007: for a late hit and a horse collar tackle.

"We’ll appeal it and see where it goes," said Wilson. “But it’s kind of hard to appeal something when you have 15 personal fouls in your career, numerous fines for hits like that and kind of a reputation.”

Wilson also thinks that the hit on teammate Anquan Boldin by Jets safety Eric Smith influenced the league’s decision.

Wilson acknowledged that he’s been put on notice that a suspension could be possible for another infraction. Asked if that would change the way he played, Wilson quickly replied, “No.”

Coach Ken Whisenhunt said he understood the league’s position on the matter, but that it would be hard to coach Wilson to do anything differently than he did last Sunday.

“I don’t know that you can say play it differently or coach them differently,” he said. “I think you have to play the game. I know from discussions with Adrian, he was just trying to make a play. It wasn’t anything about trying to injure a player.”

The Bears' triggerman is also their leading rusher. But coach Art Briles would like to get TB Jay Finley more involved in the ground game to limit Griffin's exposure to Sooners LBs Travis Lewis and Ryan Reynolds. Griffin's classmate, WR Kendall Wright, has emerged as an inside complement to WR David Gettis in the receiving corps. But Sooners QB Sam Bradford has even more weapons all over the field. His most important helper this week might be TE Jermaine Gresham, who must occupy ubiquitous Baylor LB Joe Pawelek. The Oklahoma running game has been sporadic, but Bradford hasn't really needed it with WRs Manny Johnson and Juaquin Iglesias catching everything that comes their way.

PHILADELPHIA -- After a bomb scare at the Philadelphia Phillies' ballpark, authorities pointed the finger at a fuzzy green suspect -- The Phillie Phanatic.

Hours before the Phillies-Atlanta Braves' game on Wednesday night, a film crew shot a commercial of the mascot shooting heavily wrapped hot dogs from a launcher.

But someone inadvertently left three of the duct taped hot dogs outside the ballpark, sparking security fears. Stadium employees were evacuated and the bomb squad was called in.

Only after the packages were blown up did authorities realize they'd just exploded some sausages.

"We saw something that looked suspicious," said Michael Stiles, Phillies senior vice president, administration and operations. "We did the right thing. It turned out to be nothing. We could have gone over and picked it up and thrown it in the trash and been done with it. But if we had been wrong, somebody might have lost an arm."

Chivas USA add midfielder Dejair

CARSON, California (AP) - Chivas USA signed Brazilian midfielder Dejair on Monday, the last day to add players for the Major League Soccer season.

Dejair's availability was pending finalization of his work visa and receipt of his international transfer certificate. He had been playing with Brazilian club ABC FC of Natal.
Chivas, already qualified for the playoffs with six games remaining in the regular season, also acquired former U.S. international midfielder Sasha Victorine in exchange for allocation money from the Kansas City Wizards.

PHOENIX — Adam Dunn homered with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks past the San Francisco Giants 3-1 on Monday night.

Justin Upton added his 13th home run for the Diamondbacks, who won for just the second time in 10 games to remain 4 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Chris Young led off the eighth with a single to left off Giants starter Brad Hennessey (1-2). The right-hander retired the next two hitters before Dunn hit his first pitch into the second row of the right-field stands.

It was his 37th homer overall and fifth since coming to the Diamondbacks on Aug. 11.

Tony Pena (2-2) pitched a perfect eighth inning for the victory and Chad Qualls came on in the ninth for his fourth save in 12 chances.

Hennessey allowed three runs and eight hits over eight innings with two strikeouts for the Giants, who lost for just the second time in 10 games. Hennessey also hit a batter and saw his career record fall to 0-3 in five starts and 15 appearances against Arizona.

San Francisco took a 1-0 lead in the third. Rich Aurilia singled to center and Bengie Molina followed with a routine fly ball to right-center field. Diamondbacks centerfielder Chris Young sprinted into the gap but dropped the ball while making a nonchalant one-handed catch for a two-base error, scoring Aurilia from first.
