Super human: Howard, Magic's man of steel, has joy for life

Super human: Howard, Magic's man of steel, has joy for life

ORLANDO — The smile never vanishes, the laugh rarely fades.
Dwight Howard's delight is unmasked and real, filled with an understanding about whether he has a higher calling that transcends the sport and other worldly pursuits — or whether he just wants to be remembered as another pro basketball player.

No longer the sheltered, naïve teenager he was when he joined the NBA, the Orlando Magic star continues his metamorphosis. Howard, 23, plays with a joie de vivre rarely seen, making him an ambassador for a league in which laconic, self-absorbed players seem too commonplace.

For Logano, NASCAR's star in the making, the future is now

CORNELIUS, N.C. — Klieg lights clogged the contractors' aisles, director's chairs were scattered across the checkout lanes and boom mics and black backdrops blocked out shelves filled with coils and lumber.
Hollywood descended on The Home Depot No. 3638 during a commercial shoot last month, and the star was the lanky 6-1, 140-pound teenager slouched between rolls of insulation, holding a dowel rod and a cellphone.

In a faded pair of blue jeans and a brown hoodie with orange trim, Joey Logano, 18, could have passed for a store associate rather than an aspiring Sprint Cup driver, and he hopes to remain just as unassuming when he becomes the youngest driver to start the Daytona 500 next Sunday.

"I realize it's a big, big deal, but I don't want to think like that," he says. "We're trying to keep it low-key, even though we're a little past that. It's not going to help being nervous or freaking out. That doesn't make your car go faste

Shaq in, Nash out for All-Star Game

Shaq in, Nash out for All-Star Game

The All-Star Game will get Shaquille O'Neal back.

Although Suns guard Steve Nash was not selected for the All-Star Game for the first time since rejoining Phoenix in 2004, O'Neal's one-year All-Star hiatus is over. The Western Conference coaches made him an All-Star selection for the 15th time in his career. Only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made more NBA All-Star Games (19).

O'Neal was among seven reserves named Thursday to the West's 12-man team, which already has Amaré Stoudemire in the starting lineup by fan vote.

NASCAR to start testing moratorium on Jan. 1

NASCAR to start testing moratorium on Jan. 1

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - NASCAR will put a moratorium on testing effective Jan. 1.

After the first of the year, competitors will not be allowed to test at NASCAR-sanctioned tracks. That includes Nationwide and Camping World (currently Craftsman Truck) Series tracks.

Teams were made aware of NASCAR's decision at a 7:30 a.m. meeting at Homestead-Miami Speedway Friday morning.

"Hopefully, it's a temporary situation," NASCAR President Mike Helton told media Friday afternoon.

The decision comes on the heels of NASCAR Chairman Brian France's statement Tuesday that he didn't want to "waste" time looking for a solution.

"We're going to need to react to that quickly because the budgets are being set for each team," France said. "So we'll not waste any time on that. We'll do that pretty quickly. It will be comprehensive if we go as aggressive as some have suggested, including ourselves.

NASCAR works with teams to improve business models

NASCAR works with teams to improve business models

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) - NASCAR chairman Brian France has ordered a companywide hiring freeze and suspended executive bonuses as the sanctioning body adjusts to the economic crisis.

Although many teams went through offseason layoffs — it's estimated at least 600 people from various organizations have lost their jobs since November's season-ending race — NASCAR itself has been immune to staff reductions so far.
But France said Thursday that open positions will not immediately be filled as NASCAR tightens its belt the same way most of corporate America has done since the economy began to falter last fall.

Big Ben a big challenge for Cards

Big Ben a big challenge for Cards

It's not just Ben Roethlisberger the Cardinals worry about. It's his receivers. It's Willie Parker running at full throttle.

The Pittsburgh Steelers' blue-collar image extends to offense. Roethlisberger is big and strong, shakes off defenders, runs out of the pocket and never quits.

He takes a beating and comes back with big plays, as he did in last week's AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens, leaving briefly with an injury before returning and throwing a touchdown pass in the victory.

ASU falls flat on the road vs. USC

ASU falls flat on the road vs. USC

LOS ANGELES - This trip has never been pretty for the Arizona State men's basketball team, and Thursday night's game continued the trend.

Unranked Southern California held ASU star James Harden without a field goal and outscrapped the No. 16 Sun Devils 61-49 in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Galen Center.

By game's end, the USC student section was serenading ASU with chants of "Overrated! Overrated!" and anyone who watched might find it hard to argue.

ASU (14-3, 3-2 Pac-10) visits Pauley Pavilion on Saturday for a game televised by CBS (Channel 5) against No. 9 UCLA. The Sun Devils, who have lost four of five at USC, have lost five in a row on the road to the Bruins
